Description
A favorite of butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators, the ‘Bee Free’ Bee Balm is an easy-to-grow and eye-catching hardy perennial featuring abundant, deep maroon buds that open to large and stout, crown-shaped flowers with tubular, electric purple petals surrounding a deep purple-black center. The nectar-rich flowers are perched atop sturdy stems that rise above a mound of deep green, mint-scented foliage from mid summer to early fall. The flowers are great for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements and the foliage can be used in teas. Bee Balm is not finicky about soil type, however does prefer a consistently moist but well-drained soil and full sun to at least 4 hours of sunlight per day. Excellent for garden beds and containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to around 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, the Bee Free Bee Balm is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings in perennial borders or along paths, walkways or around patios. A fine addition to butterfly, hummingbird and pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, fragrance gardens, native gardens, purple theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 apart for mass plantings or groupings; 3 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Bee Balm is easy to grow in a consistently moist, humusy, fertile soil. It thrives in full to mostly sun however tolerates some light afternoon shade. Morning sun is suggested in order to dry dew from the leaves.
