Description
Taking up just a fraction of the space in the garden than its larger growing cousins, ‘Dwarf Purple’ is the latest addition to the Bloomerang Lilac series. As with other varieties in the series, this dwarf tops out at only 30 to 36 inches tall and wide blooms for months instead of weeks! Abundant clusters of fragrant lavender-purple flowers come in spring and then the plant reblooms in summer and fall continuing to frost. The second bloom isn’t quite as much as the first, but it’s still quite showy. Its smaller size and compact, mounded form make it a perfect fit for small garden spaces and pots, planters and other containers. In zones 7b and 8a we suggest some shade or filtered sun in the mid-afternoon hours during summer.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a compact rounded mound 30 to 36 inches tall and wide, the Bloomerang Dwarf Purple Lilac is ideal for use as an accent or specimen in smaller garden spaces and container or in groupings or as a low hedge or border plant in larger spaces. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, purple theme gardens, cut flower gardens, butterfly gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Bloomerang Lilacs are easy to grow in a moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade, depending on your climate. In cooler northern zones plants will grow in full sun. In southern zones 7b-8a we suggest some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons. Prefers a soil pH close to neutral. Add pelletized lime if your soil is extremely acid. Fertilize once, in early spring, with a light application of an organic plant food or slow-release shrub & tree fertilizer. Prune as necessary after bloom in spring.
