Chicago Cold Hardy Fig Tree – 1 Gallon Pot

Was a little nervous about purchasing a fig plant through the mail. But, all the figs at local nurseries where pricey and already too big to keep in a container. Our property and climate is not great for planting a fig tree in the ground, and I was looking for one I could plant in a pot. Purchased this for Father’s Day. The fig tree arrived in plenty of time and in excellent condition. I followed the direction for, if you were not replanting immediately. I transplanted it to a pot a few days later. The plant is thriving and we are looking forward to watching it grow and produce figs in the years to come. I bought a Chicago Hardy in 2017 and it is amazing! The first 2 or 3 years it didn’t do a lot of growing or producing. The soil here is heavy clay so not surprising. I transplanted it with mulching and it took off! We’ve had a good crop of 50+ for the past 3 years and the figs are excellent. The fig tree arrived carefully wrapped, inside a box, in a pot with moist soil. It had several healthy, perfect leaves and looked vibrant! I have since carefully repotted into a larger container and news leaves have sprouted. I was not sure if this tree could be grown in southern Iowa but thought I would give it a try. At the first forecast of temps above freezing, I ordered the tree. The tree came within a few days and the packaging was very good. The tree appeared healthy and still looks very good. I have made purchases from Wilson Brothers Gardens for the last two years and really appreciate what you do. You have cultivars and species of plants that are ideal for my area and use (northern Indiana) and that I cannot find at my local box stores or garden facilities. We ordered the fig as a gift for an 89 year old friend. She was an avid Gardner that recently was forced to move to a retirement community.
The dormant fig tree came quickly, was well protected from the cold weather here in Minnesota and has already budded and started producing leaves. It was shipped in a container, and braced with cardboard. It was as if I picked it from a local place. Fully leaved, and even had figs on it!!! I recently ordered a 1 Gallon Chicago cold hardy Fig tree. 3 gal was not available. Tree arrived within a week and arrived safely. The tree was about 2 1/2 feet tall and with buds. It was incredibly well packaged, it was well secured with in the box was moist upon arrival. After 2 weeks the buds are now leaves. I ordered the plant in the 1 gallon pot. It arrived very quickly, well packaged and protected in a big box. It looked like dead sticks, but within days after watering every stick sprouted leaves. It is still too early to plant it outside here in the Boston area (it is April 1st and will be in the 20’s tonight), but I have no doubt it will quickly grow into a fig-producing bush. My first order from this company, but I was looking for this specific variety for our Zone. Tree arrived even sooner that expected, well-packaged and it excellent condition. The instructions even included what to do if you couldn’t put it in the ground immediately, which we could not. It’s been planted now for a couple of weeks and looks happy — lots of healthy leaves still green. Bought two trees arrived quickly and well protected they were intact. Somewhat wilted looking, but the weather was very hot and the needed watering. Once planted they “perked” right up. Trees were single trunk about 36 ‘ tall good root system. They have been in the ground now a week doing fine. I ordered this tree for my father for his 83rd birthday. He has had a few fig trees in the past but they haven’t stood up to the cold. The plant arrived looking very healthy and had a few figs on it. The fig tree is a little small but for the price I can’t complain…and it did have a full root system. At least it wasn’t bare root, which I haven’t had much success with. I know how fast fig trees can grow so it should fill out nicely over the spring and summer. Will keep you posted.
