Description
Always wanted a Ginkgo tree but didn’t have the space? Unlike the species that grows up to 100 feet tall and 40 feet wide, the ‘Grindstone’ Ginkgo might reach 30 feet in height with an upright, extremely narrow form to only 5 to 6 feet wide, making it an excellent selection for those tight spaces or as a specimen to put an exclamation point on any landscape. As with other ginkgo varieties, Grindstone features distinctive two-lobed, fan-shaped rich green leaves that turn the most spectacular bright yellow of any fall color tree. Ginkgo are commonly called maidenhair trees due to their fan-shaped leaves that resemble the shape of maidenhair fern leaflets. A long-lived and carefree beauty!
Grindstone Ginkgo originated along the shores of Grindstone Lake in Ohio.
Note: All of our Ginkgo trees are males, which means they won’t have the stinky flowers the females do.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing only 25 to 30 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide over time, the Grindstone Ginkgo tree is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or spaced in rows to delineate a property line, drive or street. It is also ideal for use to accentuate entryways or frame tall homes and structures. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 feet apart for solid screen; 10 feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
One of if not the easiest trees to grow, the Ginkgo adapts well to adverse growing conditions in urban areas. It is remarkably free of diseases, is insect resistant, and exceptionally drought tolerant when established. It adapts well to most soil types, even clay, and won’t be bothered by moist or dry soil conditions. Soil pH is of no concern as Ginkgo trees perform well in both acid and alkaline conditions. Avoid pruning other than to remove damaged branches or lower branches to expose more trunk.

Our tree arrived safe and sound with the marvelous packing job. It is a sweet little size now but we look forward to seeing it grow. The slender profile of this variety made it easier to plant a ginkgo in a more protected location to protect it from our strong winter winds and our crazy lawn mowing needs. Now we just need to wait to see it mature.————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I have wanted a male gingko for a long time but didn’t think I had room for such a large pyramid shape in my landscape. So this Grindstone is going to top out at 30′ with 5-6 ‘ diameter…I can fit that in! It arrived very well packaged, looks very healthy and will be planted shortly.———————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come!
