The shortest of the Phyllostachys species, the Humilis Bamboo is excellent for use as a dense privacy screen or clipped hedge in smaller spaces where large growing species won’t fit. Young very dark purplish culms turn green during the first year. As with many other Phylllostachys species, they turn a shade of yellow to golden orange when exposed to sunlight. The dense foliage grows from just above ground level to the top unless you want to remove lower branches to a desired height to exposed the culms. With a fast growth rate and left to grow naturally, you can expect Humilis to reach 8 to 14 feet in USDA Zone 6 and up to 20 feet tall in Zone 7 and further south. A great low-maintenance bamboo that provides a lushness to the landscape. Grows well in sun or shade and is cold hardy to at least 3°F.
