Description
Appropriately named and one of the most showy Camellias in our gardens from late winter into spring, ‘Irrational Exuberance’ displays exceptionally unique and elegant flowers of many forms and variations with rosy red petals edged with white. The flowers of Irrational Exuberance are composed of petals that are broadly edged in white and quickly change into brilliantly contrasting deep rosy red at its heart. Deep green foliage on a weeping mound to about 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet serves as a perfect backdrop to the exuberant flowers, which are excellent for cutting and use in flower arrangements. Its smaller stature makes Irrational Exuberance an excellent choice for smaller garden spaces or in pots, planters and other containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Irrational Exuberance Camellia is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings or as a hedge in partially shaded landscape or woodland borders and home foundation plantings. Its smaller size also makes it a good candidate for container gardening. A fine addition to red color theme gardens, Camellia gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, Asian gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter north of USDA Zone 7a, where this cultivar is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

I live in hardiness zone 8B south (Louisiana) and have purchased a lot of plant material from Wilson Bros. I purchased one 3 gallon shrub on 9/9/23, it was shipped 9/13 and arrived on 9/15. I was extremely impressed with the size & health of the plant, I did not get it planted until 10/8 but it was still thriving at the time it was planted. I cannot wait to see this bloom!—————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
