Description
An unusual Hydrangea discovered on the eastern coast of the Izu peninsula in Japan, ‘Izu no Ito’, translating to English as “flowers of the Izu,” features lacecap blooms with showy, double, sterile florets at the ends of gracefully drooping peduncles that are arranged in an outer ring surrounding a large clump of tiny fertile florets in the center of the flower head. Very unique and beautiful, the flowers will be pink or lavender shades in a neutral to alkaline soil (7.0-8.0pH) or blue shades in an acidic soil (below 7.0 pH). The foliage is also unusually dark green and glossy on shrubs that reach 4 feet tall and wide, making for a good fit as an accent in smaller spaces or containers, or in groupings or as a natural hedge where space will allow.  We list this one as cold hardy to USDA Zone 6 but hear it might be hardy to Zone 5.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, the Izu no Hana Hydrangea can be grown in garden beds or containers. It is ideal for use as a specimen or accent in smaller garden spaces, home foundation plantings, flowering shrub borders and perennial gardens. In larger landscape spaces it is especially dramatic in small to large groupings or in straight or staggered rows as a colorful natural hedge.
Suggested Spacing:  3 to 3.5 feet apart for solid hedges;  7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Izu No Hana Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and part shade. It likes the morning and evening sun but will prefer some shade or filtered sun during the hot afternoon hours. For best flowering, we suggest 4 hours of direct sun light per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Flower color is your choice. Acidic soils below 7.0 pH tend to make blue flowers while a neutral to alkaline soil will make pink to lavender shades.
Izu No Hana blooms only on old wood, which means the flowers produced during the current year come from buds that were produced the previous summer or fall. It doesn’t ever have to be pruned. That said, older shrubs (5 years or older) can benefit from an annual pruning in early spring, when new leaves begin to emerge. This way you can see which stems are dead or alive. Start by cutting any damaged or dead stems back to the ground. Then remove about 1/3 of the old, darker color (living) stems by cutting them down to the ground.
