Description
Known and adored for its elegant beauty in form, flowering. and fall foliage color, the Japanese Doublefile Viburnum is one of the showiest flowering shrubs in our gardens. Forming a broad vase shape shrub about 8 feet tall and 10 feet wide, the branches are layered horizontally and clothed in handsome, deeply veined, dark green leaves through the season that turn to attractive wine, maroon and burgundy shades with the arrival of cool temperatures in fall. In mid to late spring, abundant and extremely showy lacecap clusters of pure white flowers nearly cover the branches and foliage. One of those flowering shrubs that will always have you looking forward to spring for flowers and fall for foliage color.
Note: Pollinated Doublefile Viburnum plants will produce a heavoer crop of red berries. Good pollinators are Shasta, Summer Snowflake, Igloo, Mariesi or other Viburnum plicatum varieties.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound 8 to 10 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide, the Japanese Doublefile Viburnum is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and flowering shrub borders or against a large open wall in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to white theme gardens, Viburnum gardens, wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet apart for solid hedges; 16 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Japanese Doublefile Viburnum is very easy to grow in full sun to part shade and most any average garden soil that is moist but well-drained. As with so many other ornamental shrubs it does not like constantly soggy or wet soil, which can cause problems with the roots. In our gardens here in Zone 8a of north-central Georgia, we’ve found it looks and performs its best with a little shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons. That said, in zones 5a to 7a it should do fine in all-day sun.
