Description
A yew that stands up to the heat in the South, Cephalotaxus harringtonia ‘Korean Gold’ is a slow-growing pillar-shaped plum yew with outstanding color, texture and form. Its finely textured, needle-like dramatic golden-yellow foliage light up the landscape during spring and summer, turning more green in fall and winter. It’s narrow form makes it a perfect choice as an accent or hedge where space is limited. In hotter climates we suggest to avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Full shade is tolerated but foliage will be more chartreuse to green. A few hours of morning and/or evening sun seems to be the “sweet spot” for the best and brightest golden color.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 10 feet tall and 3 to 6 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Korean Gold Plum Yew is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as an evergreen hedge in shady to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It also makes a nice centerpiece in container gardens. A fine addition to formal gardens, shade gardens, Asian theme gardens, woodland gardens, yellow theme gardens, or in Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Spacing Recommendations:  3 feet apart for solid hedges or mass plantings;  8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Exceptionally easy to grow, the Korean Gold Plum Yew likes a moist but well-drained soil. Established plants are very drought tolerant. It prefers part shade to shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun best. Direct afternoon sun in hot climates can scorch the leaves. Does not require pruning however responds well to it for shaping purposes. The best time to prune is in early spring before the first flush of new growth.
