Phyllostachys bambusoides ‘Madake’

Spread: 10’+ with no control
Culm Diameter: 6″

Sun: Full Sun or Part Shade
Soil: Average
Growth Rate: Fast

Description
One of the largest bamboos that creates an absolutely beautiful walk-through grove, the Giant Japanese Timber Bamboo, also called Madake Bamboo, reaches heights of up to 70 feet and canes up to 6 inches in diameter. That said, only under ideal growing conditions in USDA Zones 7 and 8 that are similar to that in its native habitat, with lots of sun and good soil, will it achieve this size. Otherwise, you might expect around 50 feet height. While waiting for it to mature, Madake provides a thick privacy screen. Also excellent in indoor containers provided there are high ceilings!
One of the best bamboos to form a forest, Madake Bamboo stands up well to snow. Keep in mind that in areas where temperatures drop into the teens you might see some defoliation as you would with deciduous trees, and complete defoliation at 5 degrees F. Temperatures below 0 degrees F can cause cane death.
Landscape & Other Uses

Containers/Pots: Good in large containers
Crafts: Excellent
Edible: Excellent
Hedge: Too tall
Indoor: With high ceilings – PLEASE SEE: How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors
Ornamental: Excellent
Privacy Screen:  High branching
Specimen: Best for groves and to create walk-through forest
Wood Quality: Excellent

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Bamboo is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences
Giant Japanese Timber Bamboo is easy to grow in well-drained but moist soil and full sun to part shade. Canes will be taller and grow faster in full sun. During the first growing season after planting, water as needed to keep soil around the plants moist, but not soggy or wet. When established, most bamboo will tolerate periods of dry weather, however, will appreciate an occasional deep soaking if the leaves begin to curl from drought stress. Note that temperatures below 0 degrees F will kill canes on this species.
How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors
Giant Japanese Timber Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of this bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.

Showed up on time green and the soil was still moist. I have the bamboo in a greenhouse until the weather improves a bit for planting. It’s doing great and seems very healthy. The way it was packed was fantastic the paper and packing tape trick did the job. Thank you!——————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
Hello Wilson Brothers and Staff! I am Ralph Brown from AZ. A few weeks back You notified me I won the “$50.00 dollar off” on any purchase weekly drawing. I was so happy, never having won anything in my almost 75 years. (Birthday June 4th). I have been wanting a bamboo plant for ever, so I took that opportunity to order a Tonkin Bamboo from you. I was REALLY surprised when it arrived in perfect shape. It was huge I was expecting a tiny little plant and here it was 6 foot tall. I loved it so much that I then ordered a Madake Bamboo! It arrived and is just as luxurious as the Tonkin. They both are planted and doing great.
So, then I thought just who are these Wilson Brothers? I just finished reading your story; of a humble beginning and 2 brothers with a dream. I congratulate you. I wanted to thank you for giving me the best birthday present of all, my Bamboos. God bless you both, Also Tyler, and your staff and your company abundantly. Hugs,—————————————–One of the best reviews ever! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I received my Japanese Timber bamboo plant on 4/9/20 and was impressed by the quality as soon as I opened the box. The packing job was really impressive. The box had been damaged pretty badly during shipping and my bamboo plant was reaching its little leaves out through holes in the top of the box. The box may have looked bad but the plant looked very happy! The pot had one tall, fully leafed culm that was about 5′ tall, and one short but thick shoot. That little shoot ended up being fantastic treat. It was maybe about 24-30 inches tall when I received the plant and is now at least 10′ tall! I can hardly wait to watch new shoots pop up next spring!! I wasn’t sure what to expect from bamboo in general so I only ordered one Japanese Timber to start off but absolutely plan to order more in the future.—————-Thanks for the great review!! Beth | WBG
