Description
A hardy, maintenance-free beautiful flowering shrub anyone can grow, the Double Bridal Wreath Spirea ‘Plena’ is an old-fashioned favorite that heralds the arrival of spring when its arching branches become literally smothered in clusters of pearl-like buds that open to fully double white flowers. Budded branches are excellent for cutting and display in indoor flower arrangements. This one has stood the test of time to earn a place in so many North American gardens not only because of its stunning spring flower display but also its superior drought, heat and cold tolerance and high resistance to insect, disease, deer and salt. Combines nicely and blooms right along with other early spring flowering beauties such as Forsythia, Quince,Magnolia Tulip Trees, Native Azaleas, and spring-flowering Camellias.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Double Bridal Wreath Spirea is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Also makes a nice accent in home foundation plantings to soften corners or fill spaces between widely-spaced windows. A fine addition to cottage gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Double Bridal Wreath Spirea is very easy to grow in a wide range of soils preferring a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. For the best foliage color we suggest full to mostly sun however plants will tolerate some light shade. Prune for shaping or to reduce the size of the plant after flowering in spring.

Totally happy with the strength and viability of the plant. I bought it for the bloom, so I haven’t seen it bloom yet… so I’m hoping that it IS the correct plant. I have not been able to find this variety in any nurseries around me, so I bought it here. The experience was great, so I’m hoping that the plant is what I asked for,———————————–I love this plant also! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
We were very happy with the appearance of the Spirea when we received it. It looked very fresh and seemed like we had just brought it home from the nursery. It is a beautiful plant and was just covered with blooms.—————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Hard to find this old fashioned favorite, but Wilson Bros. came through. The plant is beautiful, healthy, and quite a good size for planting out immediately in the landscape. And the Oz king and shipping were A++++. I will definitely order with this nursery again.————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I was able to snatch the last 2 plants before they were out-of-stock. I feel so lucky! They were packaged well for shipping and both are healthy looking plants. They were planted right away and are blooming like crazy. I’m looking forward to 2 beautiful bushes.—————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! I received a wonderful, healthy plant. Thank you for supplying this Double Bridal Wreath Spirea. My husband and I decided we had room for some more plants. He has dug a new flowerbed between our house and the house next store. (The two houses are a little too close together, and a visual barrier is needed.) This plant will be perfect for the spot once mature. Also this Double Bridal Wreath Spirea is a plant that I have wanted to have in my yard for many years. Not so easy to find this “Old Fashioned Favorite”. I remember it from old, well-established gardens in my community from my childhood. My search for it led me to Wilson Bros. Gardens and I am very happy to have found your great company. Many many thanks.———————————Thanks for the great review! We are so glad you are pleased! Beth | WBG 🙂
