Description
A fun and whimsical perennial for children and adults alike, the Pop Star Balloon Flower features unusual flower buds that swell up and look like a hot air balloon before bursting open to reveal large star-shaped flowers with brilliant violet-blue petals. The flowers continuing coming all summer long atop a compact mound of attractive grey green foliage that does not require staking as some of the older, taller growing varieties do. One of those plants destined to be a conversation piece in the garden!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 inches tall with a spread of 10 to 12 inches or more, the Pop Star Blue Balloon Flower is ideal for use as a low border in garden and landscape beds or along garden beds, paths and walkways. A fine addition to cottage, rock and blue color theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 10 inches apart for mass plantings or solid border; 3 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Pop Star Blue Balloon Flower is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter, however does prefer a neutral to alkaline soil. If you have acid soil simply apply a generous amount of pelletized limestone to sweeten the soil. Will grow in full sun or part shade, but will appreciate some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon hours in hot climates. Very low maintenance. Plants can be cut back to the ground after going dormant in winter.
