Description
With its deep maroon-purple leaves on twisted corkscrew branches, the Red Dragon Contorted Filbert is guaranteed to please with outstanding form, texture and color. The obovate, wavy leaves hold their color for most of the growing season before dropping in winter to reveal the twisted branches. In late winter clusters of bronze-orange catkins (flowers) emerge hanging in clusters from stem-tips just before the new leaves arrive. Cut stems are exceptionally unique and nice in dried floral arrangements. Red Dragon Contorted Filbert is a must have for the gardener that enjoys unique and interesting plants.
Please Note:  Depending on location, climate, sun exposure, and other factors, and as with many red-leaved Japanese maple cultivars, the mature leaves of the Red Dragon Contorted Filbert may turn from the purple-red they are throughout spring to a purple to red tinted green or deep green during the summer months. That said, new leaves that emerge during summer will usually be a purplish-red. At our nursery, to better control soil moisture in the pot we keep all contorted filberts in a semi-shaded location. When in more shade, the leaves of the Red Dragon Contorted Filbert may be more green during summer than if they were in sun.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Red Dragon Contorted Filbert can be grown as a somewhat large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree. It is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or in groupings in landscape borders and home foundation plantings and can also be grown in pots, planters and other containers for use on a patio, deck or around other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to an Asian garden or red theme color gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Red Dragon Contorted Filbert prefers a moist but well drained slightly acid to slightly alkaline soil and full sun to part shade. When planting in heavy clay soil it’s a good idea to amend the native soil at a 50/50 ratio with a sandy, bagged top soil to ensure good drainage. We suggest a minimum of 4 hours direct sunlight per day during spring, summer and fall.

Great plant as a specimen. Very cool branches and great color along with winter interest. Shipping was great very well packed. Plant came in perfect condition and took steps to keep the soil in the pot.——————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I read about the Red Dragon contorted filbert and looked everywhere to try to find and buy one. The plant I bought from Wilson Brothers is beautiful in its very odd contorted way! It is very healthy, was well packaged and I am extremely happy with my purchase. Yeah, it was a splurge but a very worthwhile splurge! I asked to see a photo of the plant I would be buying and they were happy to oblige. I will definitely buy from this company again!———————————————————–Thanks for the photo! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I just planted this tree mid October so fingers crossed for next spring. It was beautifully packaged on arrival and had obviously been handled with great care. Looking forward to watching it grow.—————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
My Red Dragon Contorted Filbert was waiting for me when I got home today. The tree is beautiful, much taller and more robust than I anticipated. I’ve had some disappointments ordering plants online, so I try not to expect much. You really blew me away. The packaging was very sturdy, when I opened it, it looked like I had just taken the plant from a nursery. I’ve bookmarked your site. I won’t have to search if I need any more plants.
Thank you.————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
Our Red Contorted Filbert arrived healthy and is adorable. The staff helped pick this one out for us by sending a photo in advance. It needs to fill out and doesn’t have red leaves yet, as it was kept in filtered light at the nursery, but we are looking forward to the red color once the tree acclimates to its new location. We had a regular green-leafed contorted filbert at our previous home and loved it. Decided to try the red variety at our new home – but any contorted filbert is hard to find. Grateful that Wilson Bros carries them and is willing to work with you to get the right plant. I recommend buying the 5 gal size, when possible. The hole size isn’t too big at 12 inches, and the larger size plant looks better.———————————————-Thanks so much for the photo, it is beautiful! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
