Description
A WOW plant in the shade garden, ‘Shrimps On The Barbie’ Pulmonaria, commonly called Bethlehem sage or Jerusalem sage, is a large and spreading super-hardy perennial that impresses with both flowers and foliage. In early to mid spring, amazingly abundant clusters of bell-shaped, dark shrimp-pink flowers contrast beautifully with the 10 inch high by 24 inch wide mound of bicolor green leaves marked with prominent white spots. We’d still rave about this plant even if it produced no flowers at all! Consistently moist but well-drained soil and part to full shade ensure the best performance. Morning and evening sun are okay but avoid direct afternoon sun. A strong performer that stands up to the heat (Zone 9) and cold (-30F).
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, Shrimps On The Barbie Pulmonaria is ideal for use as an accent in shady small garden spaces or in groupings as as a border in garden beds or along paths and walkways. Also excellent as a solo or combined with other plants in containers. A fine addition to shady woodland gardens, hummingbird gardens, cottage gardens, and perennial shade gardens.
In garden beds or containers, we like to combine Pulmonaria plants with Heuchera or Heucherella varieties, hosta lilies, perennial ferns and other part shade to shade loving plants and trees.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for mass plantings; 36 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Pulmonaria are easy to grow in a consistently moist but well-drained soil of average fertility in shade to part shade. Some morning and evening sun is okay but afternoon direct sun is not tolerated. This plant likes a soil that never completely dries out, so plant it in a shady spot that always stays moist! That said, it does not like a constantly wet or soggy soil. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food. No pruning necessary.
