Description
Cultivated in Japan in 1710, ‘Tamukeyama’ is one of the oldest Japanese maple varieties and has stood the test of time for good reason. It is hands down our favorite and is recognized by professionals and Japanese maple enthusiasts worldwide as one of the most beautiful and durable weeping lace-leaf Japanese maple cultivars in existence. Tamukeyama is a very fast grower to 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 10 feed wide in 10 years or so. During spring and summer, its gracefully cascading branches are covered in finely dissected, deep burgundy-red leaves that resist sun scorch and hold their color throughout the season better than most other varieties. The foliage turns a brilliant scarlet color in fall. When left to grow naturally the branches will cascade to the ground however lower branches can be removed to form a magnificent small tree.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Tamukeyama Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, Japanese Maples are often used to accentuate entryways by planting one on both sides of an entrance, or spaced widely in small clusters of three. Tamukeyama is an ideal selection for landscape beds or in a larger sized container.
Spacing:  14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Container culture can extend the useful range of Japanese Maples. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. Click on the link below under Helpful Articles for Japanese Maple container planting instructions.
Note:  One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Japanese Maple variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow. Container culture can extend their useful range. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, there are many sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties, of which Tamukeyama is one.
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.

I love the free form of the Japanese maple and my purchase fulfilled that. The plant was well packaged with NO damage when it arrived. I immediately planted it and to date it is looking great. Beautiful shades of dark red blend well with other landscaping but it is the center specimen. Wilson brothers have never failed to provide beautiful plants.———————————————————–Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

Arrived promptly, well packaged and in great shape from transit. Very excited to see how Tamukeyama grows up in the spot I have for it.—————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
Purchased this as a house warming gift for our son who just moved to a 1910 Victorian home in Delaware. They are so excited to have a garden after living in a Brooklyn apartment. The detail and discription of this tree was fantastic, knowing the eventual size was key in determining the fit for the location. The packaging was fantastic, and when opened up, the tree was significant in size and looked healthier than the local nursery’s trees. Very happy with this purchase, and it won’t be the last one I buy from Wilson Bros!————————————Thanks for the photo! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope your son enjoys it for years to come! So far so good! I sent it home as a mother’s day gift and she loves it. Her yard in PA has a ton of green so I wanted to break it up some. Should do great.——————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope she enjoys it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
Excellent plant material, Excellent packaging,
It’s in the ground at Smith Mountain Lake , VA.
Would definitely order from you again. Your service is above and beyond the mediocre service I’ve seen before!———————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
The tree arrived very cleverly packaged to protect it on the trip. It has been planted in the center of a garden area to be a focal point among low growing perennials. It is very fully leaved with magnificent color and shows signs of adapting well to its location. I’m looking forward to watching it grow in coming years. It has been a great buy so far.—————————-Thanks for the great review! We are so glad you are pleased! Beth | WBG 🙂
