Description

With a rare combination of red, white and pink flowers, sometimes with all three colors on the same flower, the Toyo Nishili Flowering Quince is sure to herald the arrival of spring with a bang! The single, apple blossom-like flowers are produced on bare branches before the leaves emerge and unfurl. Branches with swollen flower buds are perfect for cutting and forcing to bloom indoors in vases and cut flower arrangements. Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and wide, Toyo Nishiki is a a uniquely attractive plant perfect as a specimen or to form an impenetrable hedge. A conversation piece that always has us looking forward to its spring bloom!
Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Toyo Nishiki Flowering Quince is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings for eye-popping color in sunny to partially shaded landscape and flowering shrub borders. Excellent companions are other early spring bloomers such as Forysthia, Tulip Tree Magnolias (tulip trees), Camellia Japonica, and Reeves Spirea.
Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges;  10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Quince are exceptionally easy to grow. They adapt to most any type of moist but well-drained to somewhat dry soil, preferring a loamy soil. Flower production is best in full to mostly sun, however plants will tolerate part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering. Plants are very drought tolerant when established. The flowers are born on old growth (last years branches) so wait to prune for shaping purposes until after flowering.
