Description
One of the hardiest boxwoods for both northern and southern climates, the Wintergreen Boxwood (Korean Boxwood) is a handsome evergreen shrub that responds very well to shearing, which makes it a designers choice for foundation plantings, as formal hedges, or to accentuate an entryway. It can be pruned or sheared into interesting geometrical shapes such as a globe, dome, square, cylinder or pyramid. Spring flowers are insignificant though are quite fragrant.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With no pruning the Wintergreen Boxwood will grow naturally in a dense, rounded form to maybe 5 feet or so in height and equally as wide. With occasional pruning or shearing it can be maintained at 2 to 4 feet in height for tight hedges or formal shapes. Whether pruned or not, Wintergreen Boxwood is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or in staggered or straight rows as hedges in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Also a very nice solo or centerpiece in container gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 4a, where this Boxwood variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
The Wintergreen Boxwood is exceptionally easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. It adapts to most soil types, preferring a moist but well drained soil. As with so many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. It prefers mostly sun but will tolerate some light shade. In our gardens, we’ve found Wintergreen to have exceptional drought, heat, disease and pest resistance.
