Description
Arguably the best Winter Hazel of all, ‘Winterthur’ displays a profusion of showy and fragrant yellow flowers in 2-inch long racemes that dangle downwards from bare branches in late winter to early spring. Growing to about six feet tall and eight to 10 feet wide, Winterthur’s leaves are handsome and a rich green in summer that turns to an attractive clear yellow in fall. A magnificent addition to a sunny or shady woodland border that will have you always looking forward to its bloom, which heralds the arrival of spring.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide in a rounded mound, Winterthur Winterhazel is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sun or shade. We think it looks best in woodland gardens and borders and around outdoor living spaces and sitting areas where the fragrant flowers can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, fragrance gardens, cottage gardens and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 6 to 8 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Winterthur Winterhazel performs well in both full sun or full shade and prefers an organically rich, acidic, consistently moist soil, but not standing water! We mulch plants before summer arrives to help conserve moisture.

I am so pleased with how my winter hazel arrived! I have ordered a number of plans via mail from other nurseries, but I have never had one arrive so thoughtfully packaged or so large and healthy! I also appreciate that the shipping was timely and that the pricing was reasonable – – included in the price of the plant itself. There was not a broken twig on the plant. It arrived with the leaves just beginning to peek out, but still had a number of the light yellow early blossoms (which were what I most love about this specimen). I had not allowed myself to hope that it would arrive in a condition that allowed me to see blooms this year! What a treat!
When I actually planted the shrub, I was pleased to see mature and substantial roots. There was a tiny bit of root girdling/spiraling within the pot that was just beginning, but not so much that I could not lightly trim and slice the outer roots to loosen—and I think we are good to go.
If you are hesitant or unsure of ordering for the first time, please don’t wait anymore! I was so pleased that I ordered another shrub from Wilson brothers directly! The pricing is in keeping with what I can find in many local nurseries around here, but the plants were delivered to my doorstep in wonderful condition. Thank you so much!———————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks so much for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
