Description
The Zebrina Himalayan Pine is a particularly striking variegated selection with beautiful form, texture and color. Adding 12 to 18 inches in size per year, the tree forms an upright pyramid 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide at maturity. The thin blue-green needles are banded in yellow, hence the variety name. The bundles of long, downward-hanging needles have a feathery effect, providing an extremely soft look and feel in the landscape while also providing a bright effect from close up and from a distance. Attractive 6 to 8 inch long slender cones resembling a banana emerge green aging to brown. Zebrina is very easy to grow in just about any type of soil, including acid or alkaline clay, sandy and chalky soils, and 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 20 to 30 feet tall by 15 to 20 feet wide, the Zebrina Himalayan Pine is ideal for use as a specimen or in privacy screen plantings in sunny landscape borders. Very nice around boulders and bodies of water. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen but can be used as an accent in privacy screen plantings
Growing Preferences
The Zebrina Himalayan Pine is easy to grow in just about any type of soil including clay and chalky or sandy soil provided the soil in well-drained. It prefers full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other ornamental trees, constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Does not require pruning however can be pruned annually for size control.
